Snus |
|
Snus has been around in Sweden and Norway for more than 200 years. Even though produced and consumed mainly in Sweden, Swedish snus is becoming more and more popular even in Europe and North America. Although it is a tobacco product, it is smokeless – to be consumed by placing it under the upper lip. Some people also like keeping it in their cheek or lower lip, even though traditionally it is meant for the upper lip, as the level of saliva secretion is lower there.
Many people think that “snus” is the same product as “snuff”. However, there are large differences in the manufacturing process and the use of these two, so they really are not the same. Both snus and snuff are based on finely ground tobacco. While snuff comes in two types (dry and moist), snus is moist tobacco. The main differences in the use of the products are that snuff is inhaled through the nostrils (dry snuff), chewed, or placed against the gums (moist snuff), while Swedish snus is only intended for being placed under the upper lip and held there for a certain amount of time.
The obvious advantages of Swedish snus are its availability in loose form as well as in sachets of various sizes and formats (nicknamed tobacco teabags) and that there is no need to neither chew nor spit when using snus. Furthermore, Swedish snus has considerably lower levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines, due to tobacco selection and modern manufacturing methods.
While snuff products are advertised in many countries, snus is still not allowed to be advertised everywhere. It is however becoming more and more popular as an alternative to smoking, especially since many countries’ new laws have prohibited smoking in public spaces and sometimes even on the street. Thus, Swedish snus is the perfect alternative for people who do not want to or cannot quit the use of nicotine products.
Even though there are other products like nicotine patches, tablets or chewing gum containing nicotine, Swedish snus is closest to cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, while being less harmful due to its production process and method of use. Most of the tobacco used for those products is fire cured, snus is steam cured. Above that, it is not fermented and contains only water, salt and food additives. In Sweden, snus is regulated as a food product rather than a smoking / tobacco product and all ingredients have to comply with that regulation. Due to this, Swedish snus comes with a best-before date and is to be stored refridgerated.
Snuff can either by salty or sweet and is mostly known as chewing tobacco. Like Swedish smokeless tobacco, there are further flavors available, like e. g. mint and liquorice. In recent years, Swedish snus has become available in many different flavors, like apple, cranberry, wintergreen, vanilla, coffee, orange and many more. Both, snuff and snus, are sold in tins – snuff however has a short shelf life and gets stale quite quickly, while Swedish snus – especially portion snus and those loose variations that are packaged in plastic cans preserving its moisture – has a longer shelf life when stored properly. |
