About Swedish Snus

Over the past years, traditional Swedish snus has slowly been gaining worldwide popularity, with the largest brands today being General, Ettan and Skruf. The most well-known manufacturer is Swedish Match, standing for a large number of brands in Sweden as well as overseas. Their most famous brand is the General snus line, which is available in a large number of variations, amongst others General Loose, General Extra Strong Loose, General Portion, General White Portion, General Strong White Portion, General Extra Strong Portion, General Long Portion, General Long Strong Portion, General White Wintergreen Portion, General White Mint Portion, and several Mini Portion variations.

The General brand has undergone a design update recently, with also reflects in a slight name change – the classic variations are now called just that: General Classic.

All these products, along with other Swedish snus brands like Ettan, made snus more and more popular. In Sweden for example, snus started as a product for the working class which however today is popular across the whole population groups. Premium brands and its nature as a smokeless source of nicotine made snus very popular even with members of Swedish high society.

Swedish snus comes in two basic forms – loose and portion-packaged for ease of use.

Whereas the loose type allows the user to prepare his or her custom portion size, the portion-packaged type has the advantage of being easier to use and is available in four sizes: “standard” (mostly referred to as “large”), “mini”, “maxi” and the relatively new “long”.

When snus was developed, it was intended to provide the user with the desired nicotine and flavor while he or she would still have their hands free for work. The popularity of snus today however stems from it being smokeless and offering the same amount of nicotine as other tobacco products while being a cleaner form to enjoy tobacco than smoking or chewing tobacco, which results in the habit of spitting.

Swedish snus is placed behind the upper lip, onto the gum. If mini portions are used, they are invisible, thus if you do not want anyone to know you are using – just don’t tell them and they will most probably not notice. Portion snus is easy to dispose of, as most cans have a compartment lid for used portions. Most snusers keep their snus for some minutes up to half an hour. Some keep it even longer, this depends on personal preference and the snus used.

Max portions, which currently are only available as Granit Maxi, have twice the amount of tobacco as a standard portion and are quite visible under the lip. Due to the higher amount of tobacco, they also have a higher amount of nicotine.

The nicotine content per gram of snus ranges from approximately 7 to 22 mg, resulting in a nicotine content per portion of 3 to 22 mg, depending on portion size and snus brand. Research shows that the body absorbs approximately a third part of the nicotine present in a snus portion. This does of course depend on the period of time that the snus is kept under the lip and on the brand used, as the nicotine release varies between brands.

The General snus variations currently on the market offer portions containing ranging from 4 mg up to 21 mg of nicotine. Although fast, the nicotine release when snusing is not as fast as when smoking, using snus does however produce nicotine dependency.

Swedish snus is being produced according to Swedish foodstuff regulations and may only contain ingredients used in the alimentary industry. Nonetheless, a number of countries, including all EU countries, banned Swedish snus from being sold. In other countries however, it is often considered a method of reducing the harm caused by smoking.
